Testimony (ENTERTAINMENT + LIFE): The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank redemption was one the awe inspiring movie I have watched. It is this classical movie that has cognitive contents to bring out a meaningful message to give viewers much food for thought. This movie provides a whole new perspective towards what things may appear to be true.

The main character believes that all it takes you to be a crook is to be in a prison. Everyone have to agree with that.  He said “The funny thing is, on the outside, I was an honest man, straight as an arrow. I had to come to prison to be a crook.” As an innocent man, Andy was sentenced for jail for murder. All proof is against him despite being a clean person. Basically, life in prison was gruesome and hard. Andy was bullied for the first 2 years and eventually being accepted by some of the gang and the prison’s warden. He bonded with another friend named Red. The warden was a devoted, pious Christian and well versed in Bible. He could remember every sentence in the Bible with exact precision of page and line which the verse was written. Well, of course a warden of a prison must be a justice man and a loyal servant of God. This is what everyone would see. However, we should never judge a person by his/her position, behind his smile, the warden was one of the foulest mouthed characters in the movie. He is also a greedy and fake person. With Andy’s experience in the bank, the warden exploited his skills to launder money under his scheme and use prison labor for public works to get illegal payoff. The guards in the prison are also indifferent from the warden too.

Andy’s final hope of proving himself innocent was dashed off when a prisoner who claimed that he knew the truth Andy’s case was killed by the warden. The despicable warden wanted to continue with his money laundering and kept Andy’s mouth shut by confining him in the prison. Nevertheless, as things might appear to the end for Andy, he was found missing in the cell one day. The plots thicken as a hole was suddenly found in his cell covered by a poster. It was revealed that Andy managed to use a rock hammer he obtained from Red to dig a hole to the exit tunnel during his last 2 decade in prison. He crawled 500 yard through shit to reach his long waited freedom. At the same time, he managed smuggled the evidence of the warden’s money laundering which was hidden in the bible by switching with his Bible. The warden committed suicide at the end to prevent capture from the police. Off you go pathetic idiot !!

Andy managed to nail himself to a live he wanted in an island in Pacific. With his wit, he outplayed and outsmart the warden and his guard. He never give up when the warden killed the only person who can prove him innocent, instead he formulated a plan of escape in his arduous prison life while pretending to help the warden. He waited a perfect chance to escape once he has everything he needed. 

Red who spent 40 years in prison joined Andy after receiving parole. Here is the dialogue:

Board member: Do you feel you’ve been rehabilitated?

Red: Rehabilitated? Well now, let me see. You know, I don’t have any idea what that means.

Board member: Well, it means that you’re ready to rejoin society…

Red: I know what you think it means, sonny. To me it’s just a made up word. Politicians word, so young fellows like yourself can wear a suit and a tie and have a job. What do you really want to know. Am I sorry for what I did?

Board member: Well, are you?

Red: There’s not a day goes by that I don’t feel regret. Not because I’m in here and because you think I should. I look back on the way I was then, a young, stupid kid who committed that terrible crime. I want to talk to him. Try and talk some sense into him. Tell him the way things are. But I can’t. That kid’s long gone, and this old man is all that is left. I gotta live with that. Rehabilitated? That’s just a bullshit word. So you go on and stamp your form, sonny, and stop wasting my time. ‘Cause, to tell you the truth, I don’t give a shit.

With that said, we ought to judge everything based on all perspective although it is hard to do that. Things have many variations and by observing and analyzing meticulously, we can act in our own way to achieve a life that we wanted as long we do not betray our own conscience.

Reality vs Truth

I happen to come across an article called “Sarawak” in Wikipedia. It was mentioned Sarawak was given independence at 22 July 1963. It was freaking disappointing to see this fact never even appear in our History textbook ! I certainly did not know this fact because I was brainwashed in my school time. I bet most Sarawakian doesn’t even know this too!  It was obviously overshadowed by the 31 August 1957. Bearing in mind, Sarawak joined Malaya in 16 September1963 to form Malaysia. This pivotal date wasn’t recognised until few years ago when that day became Malaysia Day. WTF !!! Even so, to celebrate 31 August 1957 for the independence of Malaysia is a disgrace because Malaysia was not formed that time. It’s the Malaya !! For god’s sake, 22 July 1963 was ignored and16 September 1963 was disregarded for few decades. WTH is our Ministry of Education doing....or...sleeping perhaps....

Testimony (LIFE): High Hopes and Broken Dream

The final of Geography turns out to be a failure:

·         Delayed for 1 hour

·         Malfunction of projector

·         Assorted types of questions for finals, without any distinct level in difficulties. There are many types of history type questions in the top 4, top 3 rounds and a map question in a final ?? I thought the level of difficulties are supposed to start from the easiest which is map and in to a detail and distinct landmarks, capital, history and background of a country.

·         Same hamper are given to 2^nd, 3^rd, 4^th, 5^th place….tsk tsk….

·         It’s all about luck, not geography since random question are given according to the group number. If you get a difficult question like what happened my team..”Which is the exact year of Belgium’s revolution”…. It’s game over because 1 question can cost you an exit in the competition.

It was a happy ending anyway, Vasco de Gama obtain 3rd Place ! Special THANKS to my teammates Moctar and Hussam. I’ll remember VASCO DE GAMA forever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope that we can work together next time. ^^

Testimony (LIFE): Geography-Uiz Pathway

Geography is my favourite pastime subjects. Reading maps is not many peoples’ interest considering you have to study stuff outside your textbook. Malaysian Education has changed Malaysian into “study what you learn in textbook” scenario. So, it is definitely arduous to study things by your own, but most importantly, as you have an inner drive to do what you like, I believe there are much more to achieve in that field of interest.

I came into this competition with a last minute, after forming a group, few days before the competition. It has been a while since I meet an equally par geography master – Moctar Abdellahi Bebaha ! Well, according to him, Malaysians are weak in geography. Well, he’s right. The education ministry insinuates only geography about Malaysia in the textbook. That’s why Malaysians who adores countries like France, Spain, etc, doesn’t even know where those countries are.  

I am grateful that until now, I have the inner drive to study the things I like, regardless it’s a trash in PMR, SPM or the things people look down upon. Because I know one day my skills can be put into good use and recognized by people who share the same interest as me.

Moctar and I had a duel on geography. While I shot arrow at him, he fought back with bullets. We're equally good. Nevertheless, I prove him wrong that people from Sarawak can't be good in geography !! Haha…take that my friend ! with Hussam, from Sudan, a debater and a friend of mine. We form Vasco de Gama J !!!!

We take on Geography-Uiz quiz at July 16, 8pm. With so many teams and some seems so strong, I was intimidated for a moment. Before the competition, I had a brief duel in geography with Hussam before the competition started. Out of 32 teams, we broke as 7^th in the first round (top 20 is going to semi finals).  It’s not bad but we have to do better since the top 5 are going to finals. In the semi finals, I vouched to perform better. It’s was a tense moment but I have 100% certainty of the answer I have. The landmarks like Macchu Picchu, Volga River, etc. The rabbit disease in Australia was a piece of cake. When the results were going to be announced, my heart was pounding so heart. I’ve never experienced that before in my life. That kind of adrenalin was too much for me to handle. Even before when I’m receiving my results or obtaining scholarship, I’ve never experience that level of apprehensiveness. When the MC says the first team to break into the finals, I heard VASCO DE GAMA. I was thrilled, we jumped up at were overjoyed. We’ve never expect to hear that. I was so grateful that I made it. After years of hard work and I finally get a recognition. Entering finals itself is a pride for me. Winning is another issue. I felt grateful that I’ve found such great teammates, my mum dad and sis and thanks to my friends Kelvin, Daphne, Charles, San san, Kevin and etc who given me support ^^      

Finally, the final on Sunday night, I hope we can do our best and make it a night we’ll never forget !!!
